Who Should Handle Human Resources Compliance?

If you are the owner or manager of a business there is often a question about whom exactly is responsible for handling human resources compliance in regards to policies and proper paperwork. This can sometimes be a very simple question, and at other times it is quite complex. The exact answer really depends upon your human resources department.

Ultimately, your human resources compliance should be under the watchful control of your human resources manager. It is the HR manager's job to ensure that all other human resources employees are following their job descriptions and that all paperwork is completed properly. If you have a problem or if the human resources manager has a problem then you as the business owner become the next person in line to monitor human resources compliance but your manager should be the first line.

 

If you have a very large business and a large human resources department then it may be idea to ensure your human resources manager has at least one assistant and this assistant can be a huge asset in monitoring compliance. However, the use of an assistant is not always necessary and many businesses that only have a very small human resources department omit the use of an assistant to help reduce expenses and reduce the number of employees in a none revenue generating department.

If your human resources manager is responsible for compliance in your business then you as the owner should ensure they have the tools they need to monitor their employees as well as provide discipline when it is needed because of noncompliance. Not all employees are model employees and your human resources manager may need to discipline some staff in order to ensure that human resources compliance is a priority.

While discipline is a priority if infractions or noncompliance occurs you should also have a human resources manager who recognizes when noncompliance is about to occur and can quickly nip problems before they become major catastrophes. You should never have a human resources manager who is unable to catch all of the human resources compliance problems that are appearing as time goes on.

From paperwork that is filled out properly, you should ensure that your human resources manager has all of the tools they need to effectively do their job and the problem of who is in charge of compliance becomes a mute issue unless there is a serious noncompliance problem that must be promptly addressed. As you can imagine a good strong professional, handling your human resources job means your entire business will run much better than it ever has before. Whether your professional needs additional training or is fully trained already is a mute point, control is a bigger concern and a good human resources manager will ensure compliance is seamless.
